Digital Photography: Monetizing Infrastructure
The underlying idea here is to take a look at  the infrastructure that’s already in place, what is already being done, and see what more can done to bring in a little extra money without increasing costs. Enough of these “micro-revenue streams” combined will add up to “enough income” and enough is the goal.
The Internet enables the exploitation of micro-revenue streams through drastic decrease in overhead and increase in the efficiency of financial transactions.
Translation: it oils the spigot to the money stream. Not only is the spigot easy to turn on, the pipes don’t leak much. A dollar a day here, a dollar a day there: if a hundred dollar-a-day micro-revenue streams can be found, they’ll produce $3,000 a month. Fifty two-dollar-a-day streams will accomplish the same thing.
The goal is not to become an award-winning photojournalist or pricey photographic artist. The goal is to become a journeyman photographer for the immediate benefit of fresh material for an existing online shop and the ancillary benefit of selling low-cost stock photography. Another secondary benefit is product photography. I am also building up a bibliography and website list.
How to Monetize Your Digital Photographs
- Take stock of what you have.
- Make a wish-list of equipment, books, subscriptions that can be purchased in a systematic fashion from the revenue generated by this activity.
- Investigate the markets.
- Cover the legal issues.
- Pick a target market & analyze what needs to be done to participate in the target market. Decide on what type of stock photography will be submitted to the target market.
- Create a list of criteria that can be used to evaluate photographs for suitability in the target market. Evaluate existing inventory for suitability in the target market.
- Design a schedule for submission to the target market that dovetails with production of fresh material for personal use. As photographs are rejected (likely) and approved, evaluate the reasons and modify submissions accordingly.
- Rinse. Repeat as needed.
