“The very cheapness of literature
is making even wise people forget that if a book is worth
reading, it is worth buying. No book is worth anything which is
not worth much; nor is it serviceable, until it has been read, and
re-read, and loved, and loved again; and marked, so that you
can refer to the passages you want in it.”
— John Ruskin
Sesame and Lilies
“Learn to read slow: all other
graces
Will follow in their proper places.”
— William Walker
The Art of Reading
“Read me, do not let me
die!
Search the fading letters, finding Steadfast in the broken binding All that once was I!”
— Edna St. Vincent Millay

Send me an email saying
you’d like to contribute a booklist!
Too simple?
Well, there are a couple other
requirements: you have to be willing to submit a list of three
to ten titles and authors. The books should be appropriate for
a general audience: no porn, nothing flaunting arcane
mathematical formulae, nothing needing a Ph.D. thesis to
explain it, no wacko conspiracy-theory investigations proving
that Karl Rove is the illegitimate offspring of Pol Pot and
Marilyn Monroe. You have to be willing to exchange email with
me, so I can clear up any fuzzy areas and you can give me
feedback on the proposed webpage.
It helps if there’s a unifying
theme to the booklist, but that’s not required.
It’s more fun for the reader if you
provide personal comments explaining why you’re
recommending a title, but you don’t have to.
It’s more interesting for my
website’s guests if you provide one or two personal
interests that I can build into the webpage beyond the bare
booklist, but I won’t insist on it.
You don’t have to publish the
booklist under your own name. You don’t have to have a
website or blog of your own. You don’t have to know how
to format a webpage, or post to a blog.
