Wherever you live in the United States, there are local charities worthy of your donation. Read your local papers to see who the Kiwanis, Elks, Rotary and Chamber of Commerce are already supporting. Call the charity and ask for their financials — in particular, the percentage of donations that go to aid rather than fundraising and administration.

Visit Charity Navigator for an independent evaluation. For example, as a Southern Californian and Trojan, I am proud to report that the University of Southern California and Goodwill of Southern California both appear on Charity Navigator’s list of 10 charities with the most consecutive four-star ratings.

Do you find news here worth reading? Do you agree (or disagree) with my slant on that news? Buy me a cup of coffee! My recipe for a daily cup: 8 ounces of 2% milk, 2 shots of espresso, 4 shakes of ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons chocolate syrup, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a topping of light whipped cream. Drop a tip in my jar — whatever amount you want, whatever amount you think I've earned.
