A weekend Gallup poll awards The Great O an E for Effort in trying to solve the nation’s problems, but no gold star for money-handling.
Jim Geraghty still has work to do: “3% [of poll respondents] say he keeps his promises.”
It interests me that the 58% of poll respondents who approve of The Great O base their approval on personal characteristics rather than his policy or effectiveness.
These folks want to feel good, not set things right. Call it Warm Bath Politics.
Meantime, the respondents who insist on Cold Shower Politics are unhappy over specific policy. The three biggest gripes all relate to throwing money around or taking over big chunks of the private sector of the economy:
- 24% think he’s spending too much
- 15% think he’s leading the country toward socialism, think the government has stepped over the line in private sector takeovers, and has gone too far in bailing companies out
- 10% think the so-called stimulus wasteful and not effective
Minus the megawatt smile and the smooth moves, The Big O would be in trouble on policy grounds.
Still, most folks prefer a Warm Bath to a Cold Shower.
