Digital Camera & Photography Carnival, #36

Welcome to the 36th weekly Digital Camera & Photography Carnival, a round-up of digital camera and photography news, sponsored by about.com.

The last time I hosted this blog carnival, the examples came from photoblogs. Amateur photographers enjoy challenges to keep them clicking, as shown by a group 30 Day Photo Challenge and this, a personal challenge by the blogger to himself to post a photograph a day for 365 days. There are also websites dedicated to providing photography challenges, such as Photo Friday and DP Challenge. There is even a French/English website that specializes in black & white photo challenges.

News! We’ve got news.

Yahoo! created a big splash this past week with its new Tech site, partnered with Consumers Union to save consumers from geek speak. (“Digital Cameras” is one of the most popular sections.) Will this foreshadow the end of websites specializing in covering digital photograph? Hardly. For one thing, Consumer Reports hasn’t killed photography magazines. For another, Yahoo! Tech actually links to specialized sites providing reviews.

Eric at Paperholic posts about a photography contest sponsored by Microsoft aimed at college students. Money! Fame! A possible career!

Already concluded with an announced winner, the Nokia Nseries “See New” competition is reported on at Mobile for Teens.

Digital Photo Journal posts news on the release of the Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z5. This camera is reviewed at Steve’s Digicams.

Digital Photography Review posts news from ACD about ACDSee 8 Photo Manager and ACDSee Pro Photo Manager.

In its Saturday Shout feature, the Photography Blog calls attention to an effort to make Wi-Fi much more readily available for digital cameras. Plus, it covers the announcement of the release of Apple’s Aperture 1.1.1.

A couple of product reviews to round things off:

After handling a preproduction version in early February, the Photography Blog now has a full review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01.

The Olympus Stylus 720 SW is reviewed at Steve’s DigiCams. Did you know that it can withstand a 5-foot drop?

Do you find news here worth reading? Do you agree (or disagree) with my slant on that news? Buy me a cup of coffee! My recipe for a daily cup: 8 ounces of 2% milk, 2 shots of espresso, 4 shakes of ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons chocolate syrup, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a topping of light whipped cream. Drop a tip in my jar — whatever amount you want, whatever amount you think I've earned.
