Digital Camera & Photography Carnival, #20

Welcome to the 20th weekly Digital Camera & Photography Carnival, a round-up of digital camera and photography news, sponsored by about.com.

Shall we start with a few examples of gorgeous photography? Something to inspire!

On Location with Rick Lee, who takes fabulous photographs even with a low-end Fuji F10, posts that he also does pastels. His photoblog is chock full of good stuff, including this about photographing glass.

Photojournalism by Mark Hancock always includes examples of great photographs in pursuit of story. A recent example is this series of photographs illustrating the lifting of the evacuation order for Cameron, Louisiana.

Last piece of inspiration comes courtesy of Eggplant With Mayo, which posts a single photograph a day.

A bit of eyebrow-raising news? Yes. Pete Wright of The Secret Life of a MS Author joins many other bloggers in noting with regret the recent announcement by Nikon that it would cease production of all but their high end film cameras.

Unhappy with exposure? Unsure of artificial lighting techniques? Calista Coldwell at Digital Cameras Online provides a low-level introduction to using flashes.

A few reviews, shall we?

Netforces reviews the Olympus Stylus 800 8MP Digital Camera. (Not a digital SLR, but sounds good for a “bridge” camera.)

Another review of a digital non-SLR: the Canon PowerShot A620 at PhotographyBLOG.

Panasonic has new non-SLR digital cameras out, too, and Digital Camera Info reviews the Lumix DMC-LZ3 and LZ5.

Pixel Perfect Digital passes along information about the Kodak Easyshare Z650 that debuted at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. DC Views similarly posts a release about Hasselblad’s 39 megapixel supercamera.

Shutterbug ends our equipment review section by looking closely at a new macro lens: Tokina’s AT-X 100mm f/2.8 PRO D Macro Lens, suitable for both digital and film cameras. This one will be added to my wish list!

Apple hosted a small get-together in the Bay area recently, and Rob Galbraith at Digital Photography Insights poked and prodded the new MacBook laptop to see if the new Intel dual core processors make is usable by photographers on the go.

Now, about that new Adobe software… something about competition for Apple’s Aperture released in beta?

Digital Grin has tried out Adobe’s Lightroom beta, and posts a review. Also taking Lightroom for a testdrive is The Digital Photography Weblog. Michael Reichmann of The Luminous Landscape collects Lightroom tips & tricks.

Do you find news here worth reading? Do you agree (or disagree) with my slant on that news? Buy me a cup of coffee! My recipe for a daily cup: 8 ounces of 2% milk, 2 shots of espresso, 4 shakes of ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons chocolate syrup, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a topping of light whipped cream. Drop a tip in my jar — whatever amount you want, whatever amount you think I've earned.
