Two of my favorite people get together to talk.
Peter Robinson, who has led a marvelous series of interviews at Uncommon Knowledge, today starts a five-part series of interviews with Archbishop Charles Chaput.
Peter Robinson is an excellent interviewer: good sharp questions without condescension but always with respect. No shouting down. Not obnoxious or overbearing. Courteous. Civil.
Archbishop Chaput is a heroic shepherd, leading the way for others in the Catholic hierarchy who should be equally forthright in pointing out scandal* and calling the wayward home.
As Archbishop Chaput himself emphasizes during the interview, he addressed his remarks concerning Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to members of his Archdiocese in order to correct and instruct after Ms. Pelosi asserted incorrect statements about the history of the Catholic Church’s position on abortion.
(An added benefit of this video interview is learning how to pronounce Archbishop Chaput’s name: sha-poo, like shampoo with the em!)
* “Scandal” in the Catholic religious sense of behavior leading others astray. From §2284 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Second Edition:
Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. The person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor’s tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.
