The Liturgy of the Hours offers Christian believers readings, prayers and hymns for every day of the liturgical year. The material is drawn not only from the Bible — both Old and New Testaments — but also from the writings of the Church Fathers and others. The material is meant to be read silently, read aloud, sung, alone and in community, providing encounters throughout the day with God’s Word, explications of that Word, and joyful acclamation.
While originating within religious communities and remaining a special duty of those living a consecrated life, The Liturgy of the Hours is recommended to all Christians as a way to deepen their spiritual life.
The two selections below come from the Daytime Prayer for today, the Wednesday within the Octave of Easter.
The midafternoon antiphon:
Since you have been raised to life with Christ, seek the things that are above, alleluia.
Acquire a fresh, spiritual way of thinking. You must put on that new man created in God’s image, whose justice and holiness are born of truth.
