This week’s cover story in TIME magazine is all about the sad state of New Orleans two years after Hurricane Katrina.
Not to take anything away from the folks in New Orleans — Lord knows they tough it out to get from today to tomorrow — but, c’mon, Mainsteam Media Guys: get out of NOLA!
From Beaumont, Texas, to Gulfport, Mississippi, and beyond there are more stories out there than sad New Orleans. Gulf Coast folks are doing more than whining about FEMA trailers and fighting insurance companies and sniping at the Army Corps of Engineers.
They’re restocking grocery stores, library shelves and fisheries.
They’re gutting, and plastering, and roofing, and wiring.
They’re laughing and singing and praying and praising.
They’re thanking folks for the help, and turning around to help others — in Kansas, for instance, after the recent bad weather.
They’re throwing parties and re-opening businesses and welcoming tourists and finding new jobs, new friends, new lives.
They’re harvesting downed trees, cutting ribbons on rebuilt bridges, moving in to rebuilt homes.
And all TIME magazine can find to write about is a floodwall in New Orleans.
