Welcome to the 105th Catholic Carnival

This is the week of the Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time. Gather your strength and get organized — Ash Wednesday is on the horizon.

Here are out posts for an Ordinary Week:

  • AvantNews brings us a cringe-inducing satire about a “Priest Caught Selling Absolution on eBay.”
  • Christus Vincit examines a liturgy committee poll on music, recalling a certain contested presidential election, in “Miscategorized, Misrepresented.” The recategorization of the questions on the poll is apt.
  • Sarah at Just Another Day of Catholic Pondering acts like a two-year-old, and is grateful for God’s loving patience, in “I Don’ Wanna!.” Remember to be patient with yourself, Sarah!
  • Kevin Miller at Heart, Mind & Strength reflects on Sunday’s Mass readings in “Encounter, Conversion, Evangelization” Of personal comfort to me whenever conversion is discussed is the notion that it’s a process not a single event. Thinking of conversion in that way allows for all my stumbling, slipping, and backsliding in addition to the noble strides forward that I’m more willing to own up to.
  • Leticia at Causa Nostrae Laetitiae provides a link to a webquiz on the Baltimore Catechism that she authored, in “Try it and test your knowlege.” Here are my quiz results:
You are a 98% traditional Catholic!

Congratulations! You are more knowlegeable than most modern theologians! You have achieved mastery over the most important doctrines of the Catholic Faith! You should share your incredible understanding with others!

Whoops! My unorthodox and slapdash faith formation is showing… don’t tell the kids in our confirmation home group!

  • Moneybags at A Catholic Life takes on one of my pet peeves in “Is Bad Language a Sin? .” Not only is it sinful — it’s boorish!
  • Jay at Living Catholicism, the founder of the Catholic Carnival, passes along suggestions “On Praying For Our Priests” Now I’ll know just how to pray for Father Pat and Father Patrick.
  • Denise Hunnell at Catholic Mom provides a list of basic prayers that every Catholic kid (and grown-up!) should know by heart, in “Top Ten Memorized Prayers.” I get a barely passing grade of C — despite Father Pat’s ending every Mass with the prayer to St. Michael. I better work on this one.
  • My husband and I enjoyed our marriage prep, aka Pre-Cana. We zipped through all the exercises in surprisingly good shape, considering my unorthodox and slapdash faith formation. (See grades assigned to several posts above!) Elena LaVictoire brings back warm memories of watching the other couples with “ Pre-Cana talk 2007.”
  • A little Photoshop™ fun, and a bit of speculation on the job assignment for JPII upon his arrival at the Pearly Gates, is provided at Aggie Catholic.
  • Frederick Gruber at Legens et Cogitans offers a reflection on Psalm 26 in “ The Rosary and Discernment.”
  • Joe at Deo Omnis Gloria offers “A Reflection by Pope Benedict XVI.”
  • Jean Heimann at Catholic Fire offers counterintuitive advice on “Restoring Your Virginity” — especially needed in an age when virginity is regarded more as a regrettable condition to be remedied than a virtue to be carefully guarded.
  • Rounding things off, I include “Reason and Revelation” in an effort to nudge along the dialogue between Muslims and Christians.

May God bless all that you do today, and everyone you touch.

Do you find news here worth reading? Do you agree (or disagree) with my slant on that news? Buy me a cup of coffee! My recipe for a daily cup: 8 ounces of 2% milk, 2 shots of espresso, 4 shakes of ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons chocolate syrup, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a topping of light whipped cream. Drop a tip in my jar — whatever amount you want, whatever amount you think I've earned.
