Peggy Noonan On The SOTU: A Contradictory Heart

From today’s op-ed page of the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan comments on the contradiction at the heart of Prez B Cool’s state of the union speech:

The central fact of the speech was the contradiction at its heart. It repeatedly asserted that Washington is the answer to everything. At the same time it painted a picture of Washington as a sick and broken place. It was a speech that argued against itself: You need us to heal you. Don’t trust us, we think of no one but ourselves.

That contradiction is the worm in the apple of progressive politics.

The worm of human imperfection — Christians would identify it as man’s fallen nature — gnaws at every effort to improve the human condition.

Limiting the destructive power of that worm is part of the genius of the structure set in place by the American Founders.

Refusing to see the worm is the greatest flaw of progressives and their grasping after centralized power.

My recipe for a daily cup: 8 ounces of 2% milk, 2 shots of espresso, 4 shakes of ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons chocolate syrup, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a topping of light whipped cream. Drop a tip in my jar — whatever amount you want, whatever amount you think I've earned.
