North Orange County Community College District Area 3 Candidates

Map showing four areas of NOCCCD Board of Trustees

The election for members of the Board of Trustees for the North Orange County Community College District is a bit confusing.

Members are elected at large — meaning everyone in the overall District may vote for one candidate from each Area.

However, candidates represent and must live within one of the four District.

The Orange County Registrar of Voters lists two candidates for the November election to represent Area II on the NOCCCD Board of Trustees:

  • Jeffrey P. Brown

    Text of formal candidate statement:

    NAME: JEFFREY P. BROWN
    AGE: 54
OCCUPATION:Trustee, North Orange County Community College District

Community colleges have never been more important. NOCCCD provides low-cost education to 64,000 students, including returning veterans, displaced workers needing new skills, young adults preparing for university transfer, and residents of all ages who value education to improve their lives.

As your trustee, I focus on long-term effectiveness and fiscal responsibility. Community colleges belong to you, the public. A trustee’s primary role is to represent and protect your interests while ensuring an excellent education for students. I have been an independent voice, asking hard questions and insisting on accountability. No special interest group has recruited me to run as “their candidate.”

Trustees oversee a $239,000,000 construction bond and a $200,000,000 annual budget. As a Registered Professional Engineer, I have the expertise needed to ensure that we receive the most benefit for each tax dollar spent.

My wife, two daughters, and I attended Fullerton College, and I have been a local homeowner for 30 years. In addition to Master’s degrees in Engineering and Public Administration, I have over 28 years’ experience in project management, taught in public schools, and served as a Director for two nonprofit organizations.

I want to continue my service to you and would appreciate your vote.

  • Jeffrey P. Brown

    Text of formal candidate statement:

    NAME: RUBEN BARRON
    OCCUPATION: Retired Deputy Superintendent

Education is the foundation of a strong democracy and a wise investment in our youth. This truism is the cornerstone of my life. Thirty years as teacher, principal and deputy superintendent and a doctoral degree in educational leadership, couple with extensive volunteer service, make me an exceptionally strong candidate for College Trustee.

As Deputy Superintendent, I balanced budgets in the millions on time, implemented programs to reduce class size, and expanded arts, music,
technology and language programs. Education needs tested leadership that is collaborative and accountable.

After high school, I volunteered to serve in Vietnam during the 1968 Tet Offensive. My patriotism is deeply rooted in service to country. I attended public schools in Orange County, was inducted to the Santa Ana College Hall of Fame for Achievement, and started my education career locally.

Volunteer core values led me to donate my time to Rotary, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, Boys Scouts and Juvenile Hall. I founded a non-profit J.O.B.S. to serve the unemployed, am St. Vincent de Paul President and Fullerton College President’s Community Advisory Group member. Given the opportunity, I will serve with commitment and dignity.

La Habra: Stay Cool

From the concerned folks at the city of La Habra:

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the upcoming weekend. An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity may create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are likely. Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and stay in an air-conditioned room, if possible. Residents should also check in on relatives and neighbors that may be vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, particularly the elderly.

The City of La Habra Community Center is a designated “cooling center.” Residents are encouraged to visit the Community Center at 101 W. La Habra Blvd. where the air-conditioning will be on! For questions or more information, please contact the Community Center at (562) 905-9708.

La Habra: $3M Plundered By State

Filed under:Communities,Government,La Habra — posted by cehwiedel on July 22, 2009 @ 8:26 am

The city of La Habra reports that the just-announced agreement to plug the hole in California’s state budget means that almost $3 million will be plundered from the city treasury:

For the City of La Habra, the proposals, if approved by the State Legislature and signed by the Governor, would result in the following revenue reductions for Fiscal Year 2009-10:

Highway User Tax Account – $1,019,356
Redevelopment Agency – up to $600,000
Property Tax – $1.3 million

Add that up and you get $2,919,356 from just one city, to stave off immediate bankruptcy.

The real work will be restructuring the state budget to rein in spending.
