Carnival of Hurricane Relief, #69

This is the 69th Carnival of Hurricane Relief. The first was hosted by Glenn Reynolds at the urging of Hugh Hewitt with the support of N.Z. Bear in direct response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast. It also includes areas damaged by Hurricanes Rita and Wilma.

Thank you to over 21,000 visitors since November 9th to the special Christmas shopping edition of the Carnival of Hurricane relief (CoHR Xmas), featuring individuals and organizations from the Gulf Coast. Those who purchased an item on their Christimas shopping list from the Gulf Coast have helped those folks get back on their feet.

Hosts are needed! Posts are needed! Pictures are needed!

See the CoHR homepage for details.

Between them, N.Z. Bear and Glenn Reynolds have also launched PorkBusters, to push the effort to fund Katrina’s bill by cutting expenditures in the federal budget. Pull out your pig-stickers and check out N.Z.’s PorkBusters page!

Name/Handle Blog Post Description
Leslie Real People Relief Barb & Richard
An update on an elderly couple living in a FEMA trailer in Waveland, MS, still in need of help.

How one blogger scooped a multinational news organization on the topic of building levees on shaky ground.
Mark Folse Wet Bank Guide Just One Victory
Slogging along putting one foot in front of another, you can lose heart. Slogging is what the folks on the Gulf Coast have been doing for over a year, and they’re still there slogging and slugging. Tell Mark that the Gulf Coast hasn’t been forgotten.
Fitch N. DarDar The Third Battle of New Orleans The NICK SABAN Sugar Bowl
The Sugar Bowl was supposed to be a rallying point for beleaguered citizens of NOLA, with LSU playing Notre Dame. Some folks were unhappy with the sponsor (Allstate Insurance) — but what really teed off this blogger was former LSU head coach Nick Saban’s departure from the Miami Dolphins to take the helm of the Alabama Crimson Tide, and how it was handled.
Karen Gadbois Squandered Heritage 1724-26 Nunez Street {Algiers}
Yet another house slated for demolition in the NOLA area, an “Arts-and-Crafts style double shotgun” that, at least, will not be replaced with merely an empty lot.
Craig Guillot Rebuilding a City Home
A contrast to the preservationist bent of the previous entry, here is a post about just looking for decent housing in NOLA at a reasonable price.
Mark Hancock PhotoJournalism Hollywood Reopens
A local movie house reopens after being destroyed by Hurricane Rita.
Mike Schleifstein Blogging New Orleans First Parade of Mardi Gras
Twelfth Night means the beginning of the run-up to Mardi Gras, still bittersweet in NOLA.
Kristen Twedt Kristen’s Column Ken Murphy Captures the Real Mississippi
A shameless plug for a photography book by Mississippian Ken Murphy, with many photos of locations and buildings destroyed by the 2006 hurricanes. Mississippi will be available to the public January 15, 2007 — but there’s no listing at Amazon. His first books is going for two hundred to three hundred bucks from used-book sellers.
Robert Scoble Scobleizer what are you optimistic about?
The blogger visits a New Orleans neighborhood rebuilding “one stud at a time” — and comes back optimistic.

Special Note: A Squidoo Lens has been created for CoHR.

A Squidoo Lens is a way to organize online information.

Three small payments have been made to
the Grameen Foundation USA
based on income derived from the CoHR Squidoo Lens.
However worthy in itself, the Grameen Foundation USA
is not a good fit for CoHR.

We would prefer to donate the income to a local charity working directly on Gulf Coast recovery.

We encourage Gulf Coast charities
to register with Squidoo
and let CoHR know.
