Squash!

Filed under:Annuals,Flowers,Hot Season,Vegetables — posted by cehwiedel on June 28, 2010 @ 7:33 am

A squash blossom exclaims, trumpets, shouts — nothing quiet or sedate or self-contained in its open-armed joy.

The unreserved brashness of the blossom matches the full-speed-ahead production the fruit of the vines.

My daughter found our first overlooked zucchini of the season yesterday, about a foot long and destined for lunch and dinner — too much for a single meal!

Alongside the calendar and the solstice and the heat and the long sun-drenched hours, squash tell me it’s summer.

Summer Heat Brings On The Tomatoes

Filed under:Fruits,Hot Season,Pests,Vegetables — posted by cehwiedel on June 25, 2010 @ 7:24 am

At last, a bunch of Roma tomatoes that have sat around for weeks being green are ripening.

My glee was trimmed on noticing the hole in the bottom of the one on the right.

Some bug beat me to it!

Ah, well. I garden without poison because I don’t want to accidentally hurt one of our pets, a neighbor’s pet or a child. Losses to pests are expected.

I’ll wash it thoroughly and eat it for lunch today, with slivers of onion, a shake of salt, a couple turns of freshly ground black pepper and a bit of grated Romano cheese.
